Matt Petiteau

I’m a Senior Software Engineer based in London. Ten years building backend systems that have to keep running: order and inventory platforms, software driving a 24/7 prescription factory, security scanning pipelines, and the platform and ground robotics behind the NHS drone delivery network. Mostly in start-ups and fast paced teams, so I’ve owned the whole lifecycle, from spec and design through to the infrastructure it runs on, and whatever breaks at 3am. These days I spend as much time on architecture, design review and mentoring as on writing code myself.

Experience

Senior Backend Engineer at Apian Aug 2023 to present
Architect the platform behind the NHS drone delivery network, and lead the robotics stack for autonomous in-hospital deliveries.

Senior Software Engineer at Skin + Me Sept 2021 to Aug 2023
Built factory management systems running a bespoke 24/7 facility producing thousands of personalised prescription orders a day.

Software Engineer at Bramfitt Tech Labs Feb 2020 to Sept 2021
Built a vulnerability management platform automating security scanning for a major energy company, designed hand in hand with pentesters and security experts.

Freelance Software Engineer 2019 to 2020
Web applications, integrations and backend systems for early-stage e-commerce start-ups.

Lead Developer at Soda Says Oct 2018 to Dec 2019
First technical hire, automated stock and order management end to end, letting a very small team run at a scale that would otherwise have needed a third party warehouse team.

Software Engineer at Eve Sleep Sept 2017 to Oct 2018
Dedicated engineer to operations, building tooling and automation for logistics, inventory and orders. Brought in by a former manager from Made.com, who hired me again a year later at Soda Says.

Operations, EU at Made.com Jan 2016 to Sept 2017
Automated my own role and several processes. Moved into engineering full time after that.

Supply Chain Engineer at Kuhn Group Sept 2013 to Aug 2015
Excel wizard, and lots of VBA.

Skills

Python, SQL, Bash, Go, JS, Elisp. REST APIs, microservices, message queues, event-driven pipelines. PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, Redis, MongoDB. GCP, AWS, Azure, Terraform, Docker, Linux, CI/CD. ROS 2, Nav2, SLAM. SAST, DAST and SCA. System architecture, design review, mentoring, and a fair bit of soldering.

Projects

A few things I’ve built across widely different domains, web, hardware, security, and fonts.

Smallcat, 26-key split keyboard, designed end to end, from PCB and case to the firmware running on its RP2040. The one I type on every day.

Shhh, encrypted one-time secret sharing, in Flask. Fernet with a per-secret salt, passphrases never stored, and secrets destroyed on read, expiry or too many failed attempts.

Secretapi, the successor to Shhh, rewritten in Go with a CLI client. Stateless AES-256-GCM with Argon2id key derivation, Redis-backed expiry, in a <10MB image.

Rpi-gardener, houseplant monitoring on a RPi, with a Pico and a custom PCB HAT. Sensor loops feeding services over a Redis pub/sub bus, streamed to a dashboard with SSE.

Ocrab, a monospace font merging OCR A and OCR B, with a few tweaks. Two typefaces designed for optical character recognition, so no character can be mistaken for another.

More of them on github, or written up on this blog.
